Season 4: Episode 5 TBR052
“We Are the Stars that Sing With Our Lives”

Game began 1:40pm, ended 3:15pm 9/3/22
Players GM Matt (Pax), Nikki (Elli-Navine), Will (Dr. Artopolis & Basin), Simon (Danielson)

Toryui II evacuating Science station - there are signs of the red star in the system becoming unstable and about to go supernova.

Archaeologists were studying an ancient civilization that once lived on the now dead world and have been recovering artifacts. There are 2 other ships in the system. The excavation is extensive and the scientists want to grab up everything they can

“How long until the star explodes?” Pax asks and Artopolis runs sensors.

Judging by the way the star is convulsing, gravity waves are increasing in strength and frequency, changing magnetic fields. We have less than a day.

Thousand of people on the planet, transporters are unreliable due to the unstable stellar radiation. Shuttles needed to ferry the people up to the ships. There are lots of artifacts not just on the surface but also satellites etc in orbit. Elli sets up engineers to identify anything in orbit that we can grab along the way that fits in shuttle bays etc.

The evacuation will be tight but should be doable. Everyone who can fly is being put in a shuttle. We can try to speed it up by reconfiguring the transporters- need to set up pattern enhancers to overcome the interference. All the shuttles going down are loaded with multiple sets of pattern enhancers, sent to the larger clusters of scientists.

There is still communications to the planet. Scientists want to send people up with as many artifacts as possible.

About the artifacts- excavation has been going on for several months now. It’s an old race. Quite advanced, at least an equal to the Federation, maybe more advanced in some areas. Amount of orbital debris suggests they had extensive orbital infrastructure, maybe bigger than stardocks. Planet was made barren when the star expanded, maybe several million years ago. No intact data cores have been recovered. Not known if the alien species made it out of the system.

Does our match of comm signals match everyone on the archeologists’ manifests? Pax coordinates with the other 2 captains to try to double check the check ins.

There are a couple locations that are blocking the signals more than the other sites. There are 4 missing geologists who were lost in a cavern below the surface. There is a lot of geological activity and it’s possible they got trapped.

Doc does some science scans when Danielson asks- scans reveal 4 life signs underground. Entrance to the caverns is mostly in tact. Phasers should be sufficient to break through. They are 2km below the surface.
We are going to take pattern relays for transporters (in addition to enhancers) and SIF units to hold up cavern walls as we excavate.

Danielson takes us down to the planet and enters the cavern with the shuttle as far as it will allow. Cavern appears natural, quite large. Old watermarks but no evidence of recent water. Way out of the cave is big enough to walk through comfortably but dips downwards steeply. We’ll place anchors in the wall as we go down. And we can leave tricords on passive scan for atmo conditions. Meme agrees to recon in the lead. Doc runs a scan of geo activity. Micro quakes. Is it aftermath of last quake? Or prelude to another? we’re not sure.

Magma caverns…. Do we have to worry about lava?

Basin is in the lead after Meme- gets jumped by a dog sized crab, which misses him and then scuttles off. Elli arranges a hum on her tricorder that should offend the crab thing and ward them off.

The corridor/tunnel is still steep but bends around to the right, then opens up into another large cavern- it’s lit quite brightly with bioluminescent plants and critters- looks like an indoor forest. Doc is collecting samples along the way.

We find the lost cave people, but one of them is very badly injured. Doc does surgery with field medicine bonuses. Doc stabilizes him, but he’s not going to be walking himself out. The other three are knocked out and can be woken with our smelling salts…. The leader of the group hugs Elli.

“What were you down here looking for?”

“The Tilikaal obelisk…” it looks just like the last one we encountered. Chamber is partly artificial.

Researchers are ready to leave. Happy to leave the obelisk that knocked them out behind.

We use a stretcher to get the most injured researcher back up.

When we reemerge, we come to find the gravity flux has messed with the geothermals, and there’s a magma interaction that are causing an imminente explosion beneath us as we lift off!

Pilot Danielson gets us off the ground with lots of daring and skill! As we get back to Potemkin, the subspace distortions from the star are now disabling warp fields, as the distortions seem to be interacting with local debris. We go full impulse out. We will get a chance to warp out when the star actually explodes and breaks the subspace interference.

Star detonates at the same time that danielson punches the warp engines. Elli hears Tilikaal say “Please help us” in her head.

Science scan shows that the debris in orbit of the planet seemed to absorb the force of the explosion around it and warp the space/ planet connected to another universe…. Managing to allow a message through.Elli relates the message to the others….
